Trepidation had almost worn down her resolution, but somehow she had retained just enough to get herself to the 3rd Division headquarters. Her eyes darted nervously around as unfamiliar shinigami bowed in passing, but she was looking for someone who could help her reach the man she was seeking, someone… official. A young bookish woman who was perched at a wide desk caught her attention, and sensing a kinship, she bee-lined through the crowd to state her plea.
“Good morning, I’d very much like to speak to Captain Chikao Genkai. It’s quite urgent.”
The lady looked over the lieutenant, obviously sensing some sort of weakness in her mostly true sentence, and shook her head with a cold smile.
“I’m afraid he doesn’t have any appointments scheduled this morning. Maybe I can take your name and you can try again tomorrow. Lieutenant…?”
She stiffened in indignation. How excruciating. She wondered for a second if this was how she came across to visitors to her division, but she doubted even she could seem so spiteful. Unwilling to let a subordinate provoke her, she turned without acknowledging her insolence as if leaving, defeated. However, as soon the woman’s gaze dropped she slipped down into a side corridor and began to stride determinedly to the captains office.
Once again the anxiety clasped at her and she slowed to an absent-minded meander. Her previous attempts at getting a training partner had ended disastrously. It was a sad day when your peers would not recognise you as a friend for sparring. For example, last time she had asked to practice with Matsumoto Rangiku, the 10th Division lieutenant had laughed and ‘convinced’ her to go shopping instead. Well, Nanao Ise was sick of being underestimated. With Kyoraku Shunsui still away, she had been resigned to the fact that she would have to train solo, but then a new captain had appeared. A man with legendary kido prowess, and a mysterious back-story. She reached the open door and peeped inside from around the frame to make sure he was there. Then holding her breath she stepped into view, bowing deeply with her eyes looking downwards towards the wooden floor.
“I’m very sorry to disturb you Genkai-taicho, but I have a request that I wanted to deliver to you in person. I have heard of your talent and I wish to ask you… Could you help me improve my kido skills?”
She all but blurted the words at him in fear of being sent away before he could hear her out. He really had no obligation to her and probably had much more important tasks to see to. But if there was a glimmer of a chance she wanted to take it, advancing herself would make her a better lieutenant and benefit the whole Gotei 13. Still, she had never felt so nervous, the anticipated rejection making her insides writhe.
