Character Backstory / History:
Sakuya was born in the year 1850 in the Aichi prefecture, when the Tokugawa shogunate was still active. Her parents were simple folk but unable to care for another and so shortly after birth, they asked a friend of the family to take her in. Their friend was a middle aged shrine priest by the name of Hida Sakamoto. Growing up in the care of a shrine priest was interesting to say the least. Here, Sakuya learned quickly the meaning and value of the term respect. Though the Atsuta Shrine was active, she spent more of her time studying under the wing of the priests and priestesses.
Training was strict and guided by the priests as they set her on the path to becoming one of their maidens. Although prayer and ritual played an important part in her training as she was growing up, it wasn't until she was about ten when Hida felt it was necessary to begin her lessons with the bow, staff, and omamori charms. Each played an integral part in its own way. The reasoning behind their teaching, was to start her on the path of purification, a path that few chose to take due to the dangers. The stories the priests would tell her, mentioned beasts and demons cloaked in shadows. Some stories told of possession, others of death, and others of gods. Though it was only intended to be informative, the stories made young Sakuya curious but due to her training, she remained on the side of caution.
Currently, her only goal had been to learn the ways of the priests and priestesses here but that soon changed. She was about thirteen years old when one of the older trainees, a friend of hers, had been asked to accompany a priest to a local family's home and aid in driving out a demon that had possessed their child. The priest and the trainee had gone but only the priest returned, his garb a tattered and bloody mess, his words spouting nonsense about a monster twice as big as the shrine. As he spoke, a howl unknown to the likes of normal people echoed through the air but only a handful of people could hear it. Sakuya, being one of the people who could hear the roar, chose to gather her own information. While the others were busy placing charms to create a barrier they hoped would keep the creature out, Sakuya helped one of the priestesses bind the injuries of the wounded priest, peppering him with questions when appropriate.
Later that night while priests were busy safeguarding the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, Sakuya was one of the handful of trainees that had snuck out. Her intention on the other hand, different from the others. Her intent was to gather information and convince the others to return. Though the latter had failed, there was still a possibility of the former. As they ventured towards a nearby town, a strange masked beast seemingly made of darkness cut them off. As it reared itself onto its hind legs, a hole in the center of the frog faced beast's chest drew Sakuya's attention. The beast was there before them, heartless and seemingly invincible from the stories, but only three in their group could actually see it. Those who couldn't were warned to fall back while the other two who could see it attempted to run back to the shrine. The runners passed Sakuya, as she was stunned at the sight of this creature being real. The surprise turned to horror as those who had carried on their way got utterly shredded by the beast. It was futile to run and when she tried, she tripped and fell. Her eyes focusing on the beast as it closed in on her. Her heart grew cold as she faced her death, her breath catching in her throat for a moment when the beast moved to kill her, only for it to pause midstep as something hit the creature from behind. A person cloaked in dark robes had stabbed the creature in the head from behind. To Sakuya, this was naught but a dream she would never forget. While the creature fought the stranger, she took the opportunity to flee.
Soon after that night war broke out between foreign powers and their country while their country was in its own civil war. The war lasted about four years, resulting in many lives lost, including the lives of many who safeguarded the shrine. Sakuya's life was a single needle in a haystack but her soul remained. Her soul resided in the land around the shrine, in a way watching over it. She watched the seasons pass, the remodeling of the shrine, and the stars as they traveled across the sky. As time marched on, little things began to bother her, such as small children disrespecting the very place she'd come to call home. Though Sakuya didn't act on her growing annoyance and anger with disrespectful tourists, it did settle in the pit of her soul.
As more tourists and more locals came, more hollows showed their masked faces in the area, drawing the attention of minor shinigami on patrol. During one attack from the hollows, Sakuya could do nothing as her soul was nearly devoured. Feeling so weak and helpless, she'd nearly given up but was saved by a shinigami. After having nearly died twice at the hands of these hollows and after having been saved by a stranger both times, she grudgingly accepted a konso although part of her wanted to get strong enough to protect not only herself but those who couldn't do so. But this was just the end of one story and the beginning of another.
Life in the Rukon district was simple and difficult all at once. The number of people in the district made it easy to blend in and escape notice. Her time here was spent mainly hiding in plain site and aiding the children of the district steal candy from the merchants. Though normally she'd despise doing such a thing, it was for the good of the little ones rather than the good of a single person. However, her actions didn't go quite as unnoticed as she'd hoped. A single person had tailed her each and every time. That person was the teenager she'd been staying with. As he'd been there far longer than Sakuya, he half expected it and because of that warned her about getting caught. Taking his warning, she began to fade back into the shadows, essentially becoming yet another body in the crowd but remaining watchful over the kids in the district. When one would cause trouble, she would play the part of the annoyed big sis.
It wasn't until a couple shinigami were passing through when things changed. The shinigami were off duty that day and just visiting a pub they were fond of when Sakuya passed out. She had grown dizzy and lost consciousness as they walked by her. To this day, all her memory holds is vivid darkness and murky voices after that for some time. When she did open her eyes, the light was blurry and bright, her hand instantly moving to shield her eyes. The room they were in, familiar yet foreign to her. Forcing herself to sit up, Sakuya's gaze fell on the pair of shinigami that had been visiting the district. Though she was surprised to see they were here, she was more interested in finding out why. For every question she asked, there was an answer. The shinigami explained the situation carefully and once they were sure she understood what was happening, there was mention of the Academy. It was ironic. The very type of person that had once helped her in the past was now what these two before her wanted to help her become.
Though she remained a resident of the Rukon district, she attended the Academy. Studies came easy to her, surpassing some of the lesser ranked noble families and making her a target for their insults. Her greatest strength lay in her speed and her ability to assess the situation before reacting. Though her studies went well, she purposely avoided the other students, preferring to be alone rather than attempt to make friends with others. In a way, it set her on the path to being the "ice queen" of her class. Though she earned her way into the ranks of the top three students in her class, there was one thing that set her apart from the others. Some of the others were already able to tap into their zanpakuto's power, whereas she was incapable of hearing the so called "voice" of the spirit that resided within it.
It was supposed to come naturally and yet it didn't. It was a disheartening situation that she'd found herself in. To come so far and fail. But failure wasn't an option, not now, not ever. Taking that newfound resolve, Sakuya began spending her nights training in the Wildlands. It was peaceful, quiet, with no one there to bother her. She would train until her body protested, using that as a mental note for when to stop. But stopping wasn't exactly what she did, instead she meditated. This pattern continued for several weeks to no avail, however she did sleep well even if her dreams were odd. She dreamed of a forest coated in a glistening white snow, the light of a full moon shining down upon the earth to grant it an ethereal glow. But something was odd about each dream. Every dream had a stranger in it, a girl about her age with hair that was as white as the snow and as black as a raven's feather but what would remain in Sakuya's waking mind was the icy blue of that person's eyes. Though that stranger was calling out to her, the voice was lost and each time Sakuya would wake up, her room would be freezing.
About three months after these dreams began, Sakuya's class was involved in a mock battle in the world of the living. Though the battle was just to test the student's ability to work together, it was overseen by a few active shingami from one of the squads. The teamwork of the students were essentially a failure, including Sakuya's own but soon changed when the threat became real. Hollows were attacking and the shinigami who were supposed to be overseeing the class weren't enough to handle them. Sakuya and her class aided the best they can, each attack drawing a whisper to her mind. An unfamiliar voice almost breathing three little words with every attack, until things got dire. When several smaller hollows began to show up, outnumbering them and cornering them, several of the students used their shikai. Retreat was the best option but coverage was needed to do just that. While the shinigami covered the retreat of the class, four students stayed behind to help the others get away. This time, Sakuya wasn't one of those running. She chose to stand and fight. The name of her zanpakuto leaving her lips as one of her classmates took a nearly lethal blow for her. With the added strength of her own shikai, they were able to push the hollows back and make an escape without casualties.
Though she graduated as second in her class, Sakuya still had much to learn about her zanpakuto. After graduation, she was placed in squad 10 under the command of Captain Hitsugaya. Though she wasn't skilled enough at this time to become one of the higher ranked members, she did end up as seat 4. During her time as a part of 10, she learned more about her zanpakuto between missions. The missions she was given ranged in difficulty from simple to "why in the world did I accept this mission again" but each was a learning experience even though she chose to remain on her own during her free time. During her time as a member of squad ten, war had erupted due to the Soitaicho learning of the corruption within Central 46. Her mission as given by the Captain was to aid in the delivery of information between the different squads for strategic purposes. The vast majority of her mission kept her off the battlefield but the bloodshed was not lost on her. The death and destruction of so many people only served to make her a colder person. While the war was taking place, Sakuya used it as a means to help her train for Bankai. The few times she had to step foot on the battlefield being the training she needed to help her. After the war had ended, news reached her that Captain Hitsugaya had perished in battle along with Rangiku and the majority of her squad. As the highest ranking person remaining and the only qualified person, Sakuya inherited the position of Captain even though she felt it wasn't earned.
---BIO---
Age: Appearance: 18 Actual: Approx. 750
Gender: Female
Hair Color Grey
Eye Color Black
Physical Description:
Sakuya stands tall at five foot five. Her posture straight and proper, almost echoing an air of nobility thanks to the way she'd been raised. Her body petite and toned, built mainly for speed rather than raw power. Framing her facial features lies short midnight black hair that falls just above her shoulders. Her bangs sweep to the left, giving her an almost military like appearance accompanied by the way she carries herself. Her face is oval shaped adorned with faint freckles that one could only see if they look close enough. Her eyes, a cold slate grey making the semi permanent serious expression look a tad darker.
Her choice of attire is simple and based off of how she was raised. Her garb is standard for a shinigami, only she wears light grey instead of white beneath the black cloth. On both hands, she wears black fingerless gloves, the knuckles plated to amplify impact. Though the gloves are her choice, they also serve to hide a burn on her left hand. The choice to wear the standard robes was also designed to hide the handful of scars that litter her body, such as the claw mark on her back and the cut that runs from her navel to her right hip. Resting on her left hip is her zanpakuto in its ebony sheath. Even in her down time, her attire remains in its rather boring color scheme of black, grey, and white.
Personality:
Due to the way Sakuya was raised, she is naturally respectful of those who earn it. In general however, she is a calm, cold individual tending to avoid most if not all social activities. Her quiet demeanor tends to rub off on others, capable of silencing most people with a single look. However, this is just how she is in public with people she either does not know or does not care for. Around the people she holds close, they'll see a slightly warmer although guarded side of her. An occasional faint smile gracing her features at the sight of a close friend and even allowing herself to enjoy a moment of tranquility with the people she cares for. Though she remains a serious person and her patience has been proven to be great, she can only withstand so much like most people.
Combat on the other hand, is a different story altogether. Its in combat that a fragment of her true self shines. Normally, she would refrain from unnecessary fighting but should she fight someone strong enough to warrant her ability, she evaluates her enemies, slowly picking their psyche apart as she evades their maneuvers. Her thoughts being that if she can find the reason a person fights, the motivation they have, and what gets under their skin, she can easily turn the tide of a battle by forcing someone's emotions to take hold of them.
---COMBAT---
[Note: There is a new system in place for the site using a set basic measurement of stats.
Fighting Style: Sakuya's fighting style is unique in that it uses little of her own energy and focuses mainly on evasive tactics or redirecting the energy of her opponents attacks. Though her style mainly involves keeping an enemy up close so that she can deal the most damage, she is at a major disadvantage when it involves distance. In essence, her fighting style is similar to aikido in that it uses her opponent's momentum and power to take them down. However there is one major difference in that this form of fighting only applies when she is barehanded or using the staff form of her shikai.
Depending on her opponent, she may feel the need to separate the staff into its two separate parts to create two separate blades. With this, her stance shifts so that one blade is poised for defense, the other for attack. Though she still remains evasive, she is more focused on dealing light attacks that target key points of the body to whittle away at her enemy's strength.
Should the battle need her to deal heavier damage, she can reconnect the two separate blades so that it creates a double ended lance. Though her use of this lance is similar to how one would use a bo staff, it suffices in dealing a sufficient amount of damage in that fashion against weaker opponents. Though her style changes slightly based on how she uses her weapon, one thing remains the same. The fact that as she counter evades her opponent, she evaluates their skill and uses her own wordplay to provoke them into losing control of their emotions and rationality while she herself remains calm.

---Shinigami Only---
Zanpakuto Name: Brionac
Zanpakuto Appearance: A standard katana, blade 24.5 inches long with a slight curve, square tsuba shaped as a dragon, hilt wrapped in black and navy silk, sheath ebony in color that has faint specks of crystal to reflect the light like newly fallen snow.
Shikai Release Phrase: Breathe Into This Silent Eternity
Shikai Appearance: At first glance, her shikai appears as a silver staff that stands 5 feet tall. In appearance, the staff is metallic and has a scale like texture to it. At one end of the staff, there is a clear round jewel about the size of a silver dollar held by what appears to be a dragons claw. On the other end of the staff, there is another claw only without the gem. Along the center of the staff is a smooth band. Should she pull the staff apart it would reveal blades hidden along the inside of the staff, turning it into a sheath for two hidden blades. The staff itself can remain a staff, become to separate blades, or reconnect to create a double bladed lance.
Bankai Release Phrase: Rise From The Earth and Freeze The Heavens
Bankai Appearance: Once the word Bankai is uttered, her garb seemingly freezes before shattering to reveal a different apparel. Her attire changes into a robe similar to what people see as a mage's robe. The robe itself white lined with ice blue with matching pants and boots, the hood whit lined with crystalline ice. On her right hand is a a knight like gauntlet of ice blue, her left a gauntlet seemingly created out of the ice itself. The left gauntlet however, appearing more defensive in nature. The upper body of the robe armored, providing defensive capabilities so that she may use the rest of its power.
Though her bankai is limited to being active for at most 4 minutes, it's skill is called Absolute Zero. Absolute Zero allows her to manipulate ice freely by freezing water in the air to create projectiles or weapons for attacking or use the ice as a shield. There is however a range limit to how far she can freeze or control ice. With this skill she is capable of effecting up to six yards around her but the closer to six yards the weaker the strength of the ice. Should one take care to watch her as she uses her Bankai, they would note that she uses her hands to direct the ice and manipulate it with great precision. Although it is possible to manipulate the ice without doing so, it is far less accurate and less powerful.

Stars flickered a white light in a blanket of black velvet that was the night sky. The moon a thin silver crescent, barely leaving any light on the world below. The faint light dancing with the shadows of the earth, mingling with those who were still awake at this hour. A soft breeze gently caressed the buildings in the Seireitei as the soft echo of footsteps rebounded off the nearby walls. With all the paperwork that had been done thanks to the carelessness of one of her own, the Captain had decided it was a nice night for a walk. A good chance to clear her mind of the day's events. Pausing for a moment to look up at the sky, her skin appeared alabaster in the light with raven colored hair, a mix of light and dark just like the world around. Sakuya stayed there for a brief moment, a faint half smile touching the young Captain's lips as she sensed a familiar presence.
"You'll need to hide your reiatsu a little better if you intend to sneak up on me."
Her words calm, directed at the newcomer to her squad that had chosen to follow her. Her tone not quite stern but guiding, giving the shinigami some advice. Turning to look at the shinigami, her gaze instantly swept over his features as a name came to mind. For a moment the boy seemed on edge, considering his captain caught him following her.
"Sorry. I was asked to deliver a message," His tone serious as he held out a piece of paper. Always the cautious one, Sakuya took the paper with care and examined it, a flicker of an annoyed look splashing across her features before she vanished into the night using a flash step.
