Hirato lay in the 4th division, his severe injuries from the battle with the neo-Quincy closed by the expert medics who now scurried around him. Countless Shinigami had fallen at the hands of their powerful adversaries, but many were wounded and required immediate medical attention lest they join the ranks of the fallen. His cerulean eyes glimpsed the Captain and Lieutenant of the 4th every now and then, who only paused in their rounds to assist in healing the most seriously wounded warriors before proceeding to the next patient. The 9th Captain started to rise, ignoring the protests of the medics and grabbing his Haori, thanking them prior to quickly departing. My right arm still hasn't recovered, thought the Zanjutsu expert as his dominant arm didn't respond like it should and his nerves twitched in pain. His graceful stride was much slower now, for the injuries he had sustained certainly took their toll on his mobility, even following preliminary medical care.
The crimson haired man continued to wonder how an entire empire of Quincy could exist without the Soul Society's knowledge and considered the current defenses of Soul Society insufficient for properly repelling such an unexpected attack. Even the Captains, the strongest of the Shinigami, could barely manage to defeat the Sternritters and did so only after sustaining serious damage. Hirato reached up and removed the bandage from his forehead, tossing it aside and muttering to himself, saying, "I'm still too weak,". Hirato continued walking slowly toward his mansion, sensing Kaoru-san and breathing a small sigh of relief, knowing that she was not injured despite the fierce battle in the Rukongai. The cerulean eyed man attempted to walk faster, but his wounds ached in pain and forced him to return to his slower pace. His mind reviewed the battle and although using Bankai was not a viable strategy for the conflict for several reasons, mastering it was the next step to increasing his strength and preventing so much blood from staining the ground of the Soul Society.
Other Shinigami spotted him intermittently and offered their assistance, yet Hirato refused them all, preferring to reach his mansion with only his own strength. Hirato sensed Kaoru-san's reiatsu signature and a concerned look appeared on his face due to how dark it felt to him. Enigma had informed him that Takashi had made his move and spoke to her alone while Kojiro-san was in the human world for a mission, information that troubled him greatly. The ice bastard was a master of manipulation and apparently knew Kaoru-san very well, so any contact between the two of them at all meant terrible consequences. Prolonged contact without anyone else present just meant that the consequences for Kaoru-san were all the more terrible and Hirato frowned deeply, renewing his resolve to kill the man in his heart. That technique was still not ready, so even if Takashi attempted to reach Kaoru-san again, Hirato had to accept not entering the battlefield against him just yet. His meeting with Ukitake-san had provided him with invaluable knowledge regarding Takashi's abilities and Hirato had already begun compiling a comprehensive battle plan to defeat them.
The 9th Captain finally made his way to his mansion and deactivated the countermeasures, walking slowly to the front door and opening it before closing it behind him. His servants ran over to him, noting the bandages covering most of his body and supporting him through the mansion. When they asked if he was in a condition to leave the 4th, Hirato chuckled lightly and replied, "It's doubtful, but I can't afford to spend any more time recuperating there." Hirato strode through every level of his home and checked it for any threats, cautious in the light of the Quincy invasion that had taken everyone by surprise. After confirming that the mansion was secure, the crimson haired man strode back to the living room and sat down in one of the comfortable chairs there. His servants offered to make him some tea and Hirato half-heartedly agreed, more focused on Kaoru-san's reiatsu signature than anything else.
Hirato had realized a truth of his heart during the battle with the Quincy and accepted it, although its timing seemed off to him in the midst of everything that was happening. Hirato was shaken from his thoughts momentarily when the tea was brought over to him but returned to them quickly. The crimson haired man took a sip of the tea and grew concerned over the darkness that appeared to dominate Kaoru-san right now, desiring more than anything to pull her back to the light. I can't allow the darkness to consume her, especially now that I... thought the Captain, unwilling to finish the thought so that the truth remained hidden as deeply as possible. Kaoru-san's reiatsu signature drew ever closer to the mansion and despite how dark it was, Hirato allowed himself a small smile. She was home.
