Physical Description:
Mitsuko is odd, to say at the very least. Whilst her dimensions certainly are within the average range for a female of Japanese descent, her face does betray her. On first glance it is almost impossible to perceive Mitsu's gender, though numerous people have--incorrectly--guessed that she is male. With her short, midnight-blue hair cropped just above her chin, her lean frame (which is most unfortunately devoid of substantial or noticeable curves), her borderline-washboard chest coupled with the name she assumes for herself--Mitsu (which so happens to be one normally given to males), it is actually not surprising that she is mistaken for a male. The fact that Mitsu does not contrive to make herself appear more presentable or more "feminine" only adds to her existing masculine tendencies. That being said, Mitsu is not a tomboy, oh no--she is simply unconcerned and indifferent about how she appears. She is pale, dangerously so, even--yet another marker of her poor health.
Mitsu's most prominent feature are her eyes--though hidden behind blue contacts, courtesy of her terrible eyesight, her eyes are wide and fringed by thick eyelashes. What complements them even further would be their capacity to express everything Mitsu feels; though normally blank and expressionless, Mitsu eyes can be traitors to her feelings although her face and body language will reveal little to nothing about her emotions. Mitsu's build is pitiful almost--her body is almost sickly with how slim it is and how bones jut out at certain sections, the evidence of severe malnourishment although Mitsu is not a victim of an eating disorder or of abuse ... as she so eloquently claims, she simply forgets to consume food every once in a while. In addition, having never been one to participate in sport or other rigorous physical activity, Mitsu's frame is more or less just "skin and bones". Her clothes also happen to be ill-fitting, mostly because Mitsu struggles to find clothes that fit both her height and her waistline perfectly.
Her overall appearance is not pristine per se, but not ruffled or messy either. It is evident from simply looking at her that she cares for her looks only minimally, and in a rushed manner but does keep herself seeming decent. She is not the type to clothe herself in revealing, overly-short or see-through clothes. Her demeanour is a different story altogether--Mitsu's posture is positively atrocious and more often than not, her gaze will be fixed downwards, her shoulders slumped. Mitsu rarely dons skirts or dresses, with the exception of her school uniform (and that was only to comply with school rules as her school does not offer pants in the female uniform; were she given the choice she would opt to wear pants). As far as colours go, Mitsu finds that she prefers dark hues, but other than that, she is least bothered by the colours present in her clothes.
Mitsu does have manners, even if she does not experience the need to titivate herself. When speaking, though her voice will not be particularly expressive or show enthusiasm, she will keep her volume low and soft. Where necessary, she will bow, though she will refrain from making physical contact (especially hugs) as physical contact discomforts her. Whilst addressing others, she will use appropriate honorifics--and it is rare that she will ever use the '-chan' honorific with someone, even a classmate or someone she is well-acquainted with.
Personal Information
Personality Overview:
To match her androgynous appearance, Mitsu sports an equally as anti-social personality. Not one to talk much normally and certainly not one to initiate a conversation, Mitsu is incredibly reserved and despite the fact that she sticks out like a sore thumb, she does not attempt to make an effort to fit in better either. Quite the opposite in fact, her lack of friends barely fazes her--Mitsu is the type of person who will speak only if approached or if she deems it necessary; she is not shy nor afraid of conversing or socialising, as she is often thought to be. For the most part, Mitsu is blunt and direct, never one to beat around the bush or sugarcoat her words. She is often described as brutally honest, almost uncaring of what effect her words may have on people and never really concerned about how she may inadvertently hurt people through her words. However, Mitsu does care for the well-being of others and does not intend to hurt people; if she does it is never deliberate and it is only verbally.
Another harsh quality of Mitsu's is her lack of reservation around topics that are generally awkward for others to talk about--as aforementioned, Mitsu is blunt and there is little that actually surprises or bothers her (which only adds to how bizarre she seems to others). She does experience actual emotions--embarrassment, anger, sadness and joy are all normal for her (happiness is a bit of a rarity for her, though). They simply remain hidden well behind her meticulously crafted mask of blankness and are revealed only through her eyes. In a sense Mitsu is jaded and bored, rarely ever excited by new things that come along and never interested in what a normal girl her age should like--shopping, for instance, as her mother reminds her, can be quite a healthy hobby but Mitsu has never taken a liking for it. Yet another supposedly unexpected aspect to Mitsu's rather dull personality is her wry sense of humour and caustic sarcasm, two more things that cause Mitsu to offend those around her.
Mitsu prides herself on being an intelligent and organised person. If she says so herself, she has a rather sharp memory and is quick to grasp new concepts. She operates on a strict schedule and enjoys careful planning. She is not one to panic easily, but she does enjoy the safety and comfort calculated planning and rules bring to her, as opposed to feeling restrained by or choked by rules. Mitsu does have some slightly despotic tendencies, what with the way she does not appreciate anything falling out of place or going awry and how she is willing to sacrifice anything--sleep, food, water, even hygiene--to set everything back on track for herself. As you can see, she is rather intolerant of errors, both from herself and others. Naturally, she does not have a commendable amount of patience--she does make an effort to not lose her temper, but she can be a challenging person to get along with.
Like everyone else, Mitsu also deals with private fears and insecurities and on some level does wish for companionship though a companion who can accept her is hard to come by. This is where yet another hidden quality of Mitsu's comes into play--the escapist. Pessimistic and more concerned with safety or comfort than victory or perseverance, Mitsu turns a blind eye and a deaf ear to problems she encounters that she cannot tackle--or problems that she does not know how to tackle. Essentially, Mitsu is elusive and quick to hide when faced with adversaries stronger than she can handle.
All in all, Mitsu can make for very interesting company if you can put up with her dark sense of humour, her general apathy for life and her insensitivity. It does take time and energy--both of which Mitsu is unwilling to invest--to make friends and if Mitsu were to give people a chance or change her ways a little, she would probably have more friends. Mitsu prefers holding people at a distance and limiting herself to acquaintances, though. That being said, Mitsu is also open to change and should someone pique her curiosity then, they will have earned themselves a very intriguing--and extraordinary--friend indeed.

You see ...
The truth is that we adopted Mitsuko. Of course, she doesn't know; she probably doesn't even remember, she was only a couple of months old when it happened. Shuichi--my husband--and I were left with no choice; we had spent close to two years trying and nothing had been working! she wrings her hands before running them through her long hair. Mitsu was nothing short of a blessing to us--she was a sweet child, a little ... quiet, but very sweet nonetheless. her voice drops to just above a whisper. I remember she was always off in her own world, babbling to herself, unaware that we were filming her. Ah, those were good times. I almost miss those days, now that I think about it--I don't tell them obviously, Mitsu or her sister Shouko, I mean--but I think they can tell that I wish things were different ... Mitsu's a little oblivious to that sort of thing, but Shouko is very intuitive.
But I digress! Back on topic, we adopted Mitsu and she was a silent child; never fussy (at least, not an awful lot), not one to shed too many tears and she did pick up numerous skills easily and normally. I was worried about her anti-social tendencies and my worry only increased when she started school and she never bothered with talking to the other children. And even when they spoke to her she was so ... so ... she frowns and fishes for the right word. blunt. As if she couldn't be bothered talking to them. Shuichi and I wondered if it could have been caused by ow lonely she was at home--that maybe because she had nobody to play with or talk to at home that she didn't bother at school. Besides, Shuichi did want to expand the family. We looked into adoption once more and then, by a miracle, I got pregnant! And thus, five months before Mitsu's sixth birthday, Shouko was born.
Even though Shouko was a good deal less meticulous and diligent than her older sister, she was lively and cheerful and I can hardly recall worrying about that little busybody she smiles fondly at a memory. I care about her too, I mean ... it's just that ... don't tell Mitsu I said this, but Shouko is just a little more normal, you know? She behaves like a stereotypical girl of her age--she's twelve now--and Mitsu, well, doesn't. If anything, Mitsu's more like a boy. Speaking of which, as she began to grow, my worry for Mitsuko only intensified. It was not only that she didn't speak very much to her classmates or did not bring friends over often; oh no, it had grown worse. Mitsuko took no interest in anything ordinary children might have liked--television, games, internet. She had no hobbies either and she didn't play sports as well. Quite frankly, I was prepared to take her to a child psychiatrist but Shuichi was reluctant and disagreed, claiming that perhaps Mitsu was just confused and hadn't found anything that really interested her yet.
Though really, I doubted Shuichi has the right to tell me such a thing--certainly, he is Misuko's father and I know he, like me, only wanted what was best for her, but his job as a doctor kept him away from home an awful lot and as a housewife, I've spent more time with the children than he does and I like to think I know them and their needs better than him. A little after Mitsu turned thirteen, we both agreed that a visit to a psychiatrist would not hurt--even Shuichi decided that her behaviour was odd and he tried to convince both himself and me repeatedly that the visit was just a precaution. I'm sure it was just concern for Mitsu and a desire for her to not be afflicted by mental illness that led to him not wanting her to be ill ... I know my husband is a caring man and a good father and he wouldn't be ashamed of Mitsu were she mentally ill.
The visit didn't prove anything to us. The psychiatrist claimed there was nothing wrong with Mitsu and Mitsu's behaviour did not change visibly either. We asked her numerous times what happened, but all Mitsu ever revealed was that they talked and that was all. Eventually both Shuichi and I gave up, deciding that maybe that was all that had really taken place.
I think things have become both better and worse since Mitsu entered her third year of high school. She's still quiet and boyish in appearance and she refuses to let anyone address her as Mitsuko but I think she's becoming a little more attached to Shouko now--I see her helping Shouko out with her homework and giving her advice sometimes. I suppose maybe I as just overreacting ... my children are very dear to me, you know? I just feel the need to make sure no harm befalls them; perhaps I'm overprotective but it's only for their good. I still try to rope Mitsu into going shopping with me, but she still stubbornly refuses to do so ... I think I'll just leave her alone for now. Maybe I'm trying too hard to bond with her.
