Though the mountain air was cool for the moment, she could feel the radiance of the sun low as it was in its circadian ascent, and was sure that when it finally rose to to its peak far above those of the rocky horizon the whole area would be warmed by its brilliant light. This place was glorious, an alpine lake enclosed by an arboreal border, a private yet spacious example of a pristine landscape in a degrading human world. They would not be bothered here, safe from both their enemies and the curious awareness that some of the mortal beings they had pledged to protect displayed. The occassion was not sombre quite the opposite, Nanao Ise was making sure that this would be a most enjoyable event though there were those who would question whether the reputable woman had any real knowledge of fun to begin with. And to them she would respond, if they ever dared to ask, how could the lieutenant of a division with a captain like hers be a stranger to fun? A celebration hosted by the 8th was long overdue, and normally she would have timed the event with the coming of the sakura blossoms. However, she did not have the heart, nor the want, to enjoy the beautiful spring event without her captain who waited all year to revel in their glory and as he was still absent she could not bring herself to host it if he wasn't there.
She had briefly considered a beach party in the human world knowing that humans often celebrated the coming of the summer in this way, but she had decide the potential far disaster was too great. There were more the a couple of mischeivous characters in the Gotei and at least here they would be able to do as they desired unrestrained. And she knew some of the older, more thoughtful shinigami would appreciate the glorious peace of the setting. With pride borne from her organizational skills, she admired the four long picnic tables that were set up along the beach of the lake, places set just waiting for shinigami to fill them. She had rose long before the sun to start preparing though it had only taken her a couple of hours to get everything ready. Sighing contentedly she walked over to the picnic baskets she had brought and removed the curry buns and dorayaki she had prepared the night before, placing them on a smaller table beside the others that she hoped would fill with food as others brought their offerings. Beside them she placed five bottles of sake that she had borrowed from one of Captain Kyoraku's secret stashes, knowing that they wouldn't be missed too much. She had often tried to clear out all his hiding places and still he somehow managed to source his favourite drink. Perhaps their bar-owning third seat had something to do with it, but Shunsui would always have his methods so it didn't really bear thinking about.
She had posted bulletins to each captain, and messages to the cells of all other shinigami listing the details of this summer celebration only days before, wanting it to be a surprise. If she had sent invites earlier she knew she would have recieved offers of help and this was supposed to be a show of appreciation for all the good work everyone had put in over the winter and the time after. Anyway it was done now, all that was left to do was wait for the arrival of everyone then let the games begin. In her message she had stated that if anyone wanted to entertain the group they were welcome to bring instruments or prepare routines to amuse their commrades. Hopefully Kai would come earlier and bring along his human-made music device to create a pleasant, lively ambience throughout the day, and performances could happen in the evening.
She sat on the sand at the waters edge, dipping her bare feet into the cool, dark waters of the lake and smiled, her face finally relaxing as she freed herself of anxiety. In her pale lavander summer dress she looked quite unlike her normal, official self, and though she supposed Shunsui would say he hardly recognised her, he too would be proud of her efforts to bring a little fun to the Gotei 13.
